Disgaea; Why didn't Illy make this before?!

So, I broke down and bought Disgaea. We've had it at my GameStop for some time now, in REALLY good condition, but its stayed around for so long, I got used to its presence. This week, I began to worry, worry that it may disappear, not to mention I got a bigger check than usual. So I spent the $30 to buy it. BIG MISTAKE that I hadn't done this earlier. Luckily, the case, manual, and game, are all like new, almost no fingerprints, no scratches, no folds, absolutely amazing.

I finally finished all of the AC series I need to, so I have time to play this game, and golly, it is amazing! The story, the dialog, the level system (whats the max? ; ; ), the classes, oh the classes.

Illy, I would personally like to thank you for opening my eyes to this game. And where ever my belief that it was a bad game came from, I would like to see it beat to the ground.

Sooo, yea... I have 6 hours play time so far, on chapter 2, though I haven't started the first board.

I have this phobia, I'm afraid of being weak in RPGs, and so I usually end up over leveled and over powered. Laharl is 10, everyone else is 5-7, except for the prinnies and the cleric, who are all 3.

So, any tips on anything? How should I go about leveling the cleric, are prinnies good for anything besides throwing, do they gain exp from killing when thrown, do they do more explosive damage with levels, am I overleveled, is it a bad idea to try and force the counsel, what classes should I commit to?

Man, I've got a bajillion other questions, but for now, I'mma leave those there. And this closing statement, "God, is this game good?" "Yes, Vaku, yes it is."

We have something in common now, we are both forever indebted to Illy.

However, im not gonna bother getting Laharl in Disgaea 2, my tolerance for boredom wont let me powerlevel that high.

I'm totally playing the first one, I have an obsession with stories, and so I start as far back as I can. Yea, the subtitle is Hour of Darkness.

I was at Barnes & Noble today, and found an artbook for Disgaea, for $20 USD, bought it right away. ^-^;;

I can face incredible acts of torture for a good story, that, and I the under-level-phobia, so I'm so gonna try for max level, which is apparently above 2000. @.@

Only 1987 more to go before Vaku hits that benchmark... And then theres the reincarnation thing...

How do you level a freaking cleric to 100?!

They have the second one new in troths at my work, so I'm definately gonna pick it up when and if I finish this one.

Kinda disappointing that it doesn't involve Laharl, or say which ending is the canon one... Or maybe it does... Oho?

Anyway, scout grinding time....

Its kinda sad, my star mage, archer, and cleric are all level 5. The Star mage I just never felt like using, she got to 5 through bonuses. The archer is too weak for the solo leveling regimine I use for most of my melee fighter (and although it feels like the scout can take less punishment, he always 1-hit-KOs the mob and can run like hell if need be). And I can't figure out how to level a cleric outside of bonuses, a friend told me to have them attack, but thats only for 1-0 damage, not effective for leveling...

EDIT 2: After you all play the Disgaea games, I reccomend Phantom Brave. Best game in the history of history, and it's made by the same team that did Disgaea.

1)Yesyes. You all are welcome.

2) I HATE YOU ALL. I can only find the 2nd Disgaea :(. I'mma gonna try my best to buy the first one from Rosenqueen, though.

3)If you wants, I got a funfun trick in D2 to get a level 9999 nekomata within the time space of about a day. I've never tried it myself, but countless others have.

As for Vaku's questions:

How should I go about leveling the cleric

Clerics are healers, no? Have them heal things.

are prinnies good for anything besides throwing

The highest tier of the prinny class, Prinny God, has a huge experience bonus, and in D2, immunity to all elements. Reincarnate your characters as one, then reincarnate em back.

do they gain exp from killing when thrown

If they did, Illy would be a happy man, and a hippie blue mage.

do they do more explosive damage with levels

Prinnies do damage equal to half of their current HP, regardless of the stats of those hit by the explosion.

am I overleveled

No. No such thing in Disgaea.

is it a bad idea to try and force the counsel

Only if they're uber strong and you're not.

what classes should I commit to?
Healer, Warrior, Thief, Nekomata, Empusa, Archer (If ya got them), and any story/bonus characters you get.

Oh, and prinnies. You don't know how much I regret not leveling my prinnies.

EDIT: Oh, level cap in all NIS games are lvl 9999.

Alright, lets see, follow-up questions...

Well first off, funny thing, I bought this really good condition copy after we sold a really good condition copy once before, today we got a 3rd really good condition quality (equal to mine) in. Crazy, I tell you.

I'm not sure how things are in D2, but in D1 clerics only gain staff skill from healing, only kill will register exp. ; ;

According to this artbook, Prinny gods in D1 have immunity to status effects and ST changes... Don't know about exp...

Cleric is really hard to level <_< Warrior, double check, thief... will get one soonish... Nekomata? Kit Cat class, first form... same with Empusa and succubi... um... jooc, why?

But yea, Archer feels weaker than the strider. I need both at 100 (strider at 200 ; ;) For the Angel and Devil classes.

New questions!

Um... oh yea! When is reincarnation a good idea? Should I wait until level 9999, reincarnate to level 1 and then go all the way back, or should I, for instance, with the warrior, get him to 100, to unlock Cosmic Hero, and then reincarnate him as that, with Genius rank, and max him out like that?

So yea, most pressing question is still about leveling the cleric...

Fun fact: Did you know that the only clothing Kit Cats wear is the ribbon in their hair?

The sketches and full-color image in this book tried to make that point blatantly obvious.

On that note, If I ever make a Nosferatu, I'mma name him Duke!

I dunno. All my knowledge is based off of how D2 works. But if Succubi work the same way, their health-stealing spells are really good. And archers have the heavy-hitting Zielregen spell.

Personally, I don't use reincarnation alot. The only way I could find use for it is to have a character learn every spell through various mage forms, and then reincarnate him as something good at fighting, so he can both spellcast and battle normally.

And as for the Nekomatas' distinct absense of clothing... In D2, before the very last chapter, if you talk to the Neko in town, she says something to the effect of "Someone better warn me before we change back to humans. I don't want to turn back and end up naked!"

Clearly, she hasn't looked in a mirror recently XD

Theres prolly a lot in terms of gameplay and balancing changed in D2, cause in D1 Zielregen doesn't sound too hot: Bow 15 SP: 65 Ele: Fire
Height: 12/12 Power: C
SE: Forget

Not to mention that in D2 their damage is calculated off of Hit and Atk stats, whereas a melee just worries about Atk, and a scout, just Hit. I'll level it for Celestial Host, but it doesn't seem practical after that...

As a remedy to my cleric issue, I taught her star, from my star mage. I also taught it to Flonne.

Dear god, Zielregen is one of the most annoying (and one of the most satisfying once you finally GET an archer) spells in D2. It hits a square 3x3 area, does massive damage, and occasionally causes amnesia. And the animation is mega-time consuming. It's cool the first time, but come on.

I've never quite understood how the Star element works, since nobody seems to have it listed in their resistance stats. Is that the whole point, or is there something else to it?

Star magic is special because of that, its non-elemental damaging magic. So elemental resistances won't matter.

I found an awesome board to level at. Got from 19-30 in one fight, I'mma hang out there until I get all of my classes to 30, maybe not my story-line monsters, but everyone else, yea...

Once again, may be a difference between D1 and D2, but I find it that it's not only spellcasters that have star-element moves. For example, gun-wielding units eventually learn "Proximal Blast," which is a star-element move. And yet a lot of other classes have normal non-element spells, like the Succubus's "Drain"

Yea, scouts get proximal shot in this game too, and it has Star attribute. But its essentially a magical property that does non-elemental damage. There is no opposite to star.

From the Magic Encyclopedia of Disgaea: Star uses the infinite force of spce, and is the most powerful.

Thats all it says on the matter...

Drain is considered an "Unknown" Element, same as healing, its strange...

But star magic isnt effected by normal fire, ice, wind res.
